Kitchen Appliance Fit Checklist Before Cabinet Orders
A kitchen appliance fit checklist should cover more than the opening in a cabinet. The appliance must reach the room, fit with the planned finishes and work with its doors open. Check all of those conditions before approving a Toronto kitchen’s cabinet order.
This guide is an owner coordination tool, not an installation specification. The selected model’s instructions and the project professionals determine the required openings, clearances and service connections.
Lock the appliance schedule before cabinet approval
Create one list of appliances to keep, replace or add. Record the exact model number and save its current installation guide. A brand name, photograph or advertised width is not enough to approve the surrounding cabinetry.
Mark undecided items clearly. If you are choosing between two ovens, ask the designer what must be settled before the order can proceed. Do not let a provisional model become a final cabinet dimension by accident.
IKEA Canada’s kitchen measuring guidance includes the room, openings, obstacles and service locations. Use a complete measured plan as the foundation, then check the selected products against it.
Check delivery fit, installed fit and operating fit
Keep these checks separate. Delivery fit covers the route to the room. Installed fit covers the finished opening and required clearances. Operating fit covers doors, drawers, handles and access during use.
For example, a fridge may fit its niche but have a door that cannot open as intended beside a wall. A dishwasher may fit under the counter while its open door blocks a drawer. Ask the designer to draw those movements.
Whirlpool Canada’s delivery guidance addresses preparation and measurement. Confirm the actual supplier’s delivery scope and the chosen model’s requirements rather than applying one generic clearance to every appliance.
| Fit check | What to review | Who confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Doors, turns, lift and packaging | Supplier and site team |
| Installed | Finished opening and clearances | Designer and installer |
| Operating | Doors, drawers and nearby use | Designer with owner |
| Service | Connections and maintenance access | Relevant trades |
Review neighbouring cabinets and finishes
Check handles, fillers, panels, counters and nearby walls on the same drawing. Ask whether the dimensions refer to the appliance body or include projecting parts. Verify the finished condition instead of relying on an empty-room measurement.
Imagine a countertop edge beside a range or a panel beside a refrigerator. The visible alignment is one question; installation and operation are others. Have the installer review the detail before the finish order becomes final.
Our cabinet refacing and replacement guide helps if some cabinetry will remain. Retained cabinets still need to work with the new equipment, not just the new door colour.
Confirm services without doing trade work yourself
Give the electrical, plumbing and ventilation professionals the model documents. Ask them to confirm suitability and identify any additional work. Do not open panels, disconnect gas or alter plumbing to check a connection yourself.
The Electrical Safety Authority explains the notification process for electrical work. Ask the electrical contractor how the selected equipment affects the project scope. Coordinate the hood through the kitchen ventilation plan as well.
Use these questions to review your kitchen appliance fit checklist plan:
- Can the item reach the kitchen?
- Will doors and drawers work?
- Who approves a replacement model?
Recheck every substitution before accepting it
A replacement model offered after a delay needs another review, even if its advertised size is similar. Send the new documents to the designer and relevant trades. Ask whether cabinetry, services or delivery arrangements must change.
Keep a dated approved appliance schedule and remove superseded copies from the active order file. Ask the supplier to confirm what will arrive and who will receive it. The owner should not have to resolve a model mismatch at the loading dock.
