Sewer backup restoration
Sewage coming up right now? Call (647) 428-0007. Sewage coming up through a floor drain or toilet is the most hazardous kind of water damage in a home. It carries bacteria and viruses, and anything porous it touches has to be removed. This isn’t a job for a shop vac and bleach.
Our IICRC WRT certified crews contain the area, remove the sewage, take out contaminated materials, disinfect and dry. In Toronto we aim to be on site within 60 minutes, Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
Sewage coming up right now? Do this
- Stop using water in the house. No flushing, showers, dishwasher or laundry. Everything you drain can come up through the lowest drain.
- Keep everyone out of the area, especially children and pets. Don’t walk through it in socks or bare feet.
- Stay away if water is near the electrical panel. Call Toronto Hydro if the power needs cutting.
- Call 311. The City can check whether the blockage is in the municipal sewer rather than your own pipes.
- Photograph everything before anything is moved, then call us.
How we clean up a sewer backup
Sewage is Category 3 water under the IICRC S500 standard, and every step is done to that level.
Containment and protection
The affected area is sealed off, and our crew works in protective equipment so contamination doesn’t spread through the house.
Sewage removal
Pumps and extractors remove the sewage and the solids that came with it.
Removing contaminated materials
Carpet, underpad, insulation and drywall that sewage touched are removed and bagged for disposal.
Disinfection
Floors, framing and every hard surface are cleaned and disinfected, then cleaned again.
Drying
Once clean, the structure is dried with dehumidifiers and air movers, with readings on every visit.
Documentation
Photos, readings and a scope in Xactimate for your sewer backup claim.
Why sewer backups happen in Toronto
Many older Toronto neighbourhoods have combined sewers that carry both stormwater and sewage. In a heavy rainstorm they fill up, and the water looks for the lowest way out, which is often a basement floor drain. Backups also happen when your own sewer line is blocked by roots, grease or a collapsed pipe. A plumber can camera-inspect the line once the cleanup is done.
Is the city or the homeowner responsible?
If the blockage is in the City’s sewer, the City deals with the pipe. The pipe from your house to the property line, and the damage inside your home, are usually yours and your insurer’s. Calling 311 early means the City records the call, which can help with your claim.
Does insurance cover sewer backup?
Only if your policy includes sewer backup coverage, which in Ontario is often an add-on. If you have it, call your insurer to open the claim. We bill all insurers directly and write the estimate in Xactimate. Sewer backups are priced after inspection, because what has to come out depends on how far the sewage spread.
Preventing the next one
A backwater valve stops sewage flowing back into the house through the floor drain. It has to be installed by a licensed plumber, and since May 2026 the City of Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program covers 80% of eligible work, up to $6,650 per property. We don’t do plumbing, so we’ll point you to a plumber once the cleanup is done.

Yes. Sewage is Category 3 water and can carry bacteria, viruses and parasites. Keep people and pets out of the area, don’t touch it with bare hands, and don’t try to clean it up with household products.
Yes. If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, call 311 so the City can check whether the blockage is in the municipal sewer. The call is also recorded, which can help with your insurance claim.
Only if your policy includes sewer backup coverage, which is often a separate add-on. Check your policy or ask your broker. If you’re covered, we bill the insurer directly.
Hard, non-porous items like concrete, tile, metal and sealed surfaces can usually be cleaned and disinfected. Carpet, underpad, insulation, drywall and upholstered furniture that sewage touched have to be removed.
